The SNARE complex is the molecular machinery that fuses neurotransmitter vesicles with the nerve terminal membrane — no SNARE assembly, no acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction. SNAP-8 is an eight-amino-acid synthetic peptide modeled after a segment of SNAP-25, one of the three SNARE proteins (alongside syntaxin and VAMP/synaptobrevin). It competes with native SNAP-25 for binding positions within the complex, modulating its assembly in vitro.
